The film opens with Miles taking off with his longtime friend Jack; (Thomas Haden Church) for an orchestrated week of wine, golf and camaraderie somewhere in the central California coast.
Afterward, the two will motor back to reality, where Jack, will marry for the first time. For Miles, eagerly waiting word on the fate of yet another manuscript, the week promises a much-needed respite from his day-to-day; for Jack, it's an excuse to beat a quick if temporary retreat from the future.
Their weeklong escapades resulted the two running on opposite directions.
It is fantastic somehow to see a film set on a 7-day event and yet director Payne makes us care, a lot, about these two misfits who seem headed towards their own self-inflicted destructions."
Sideways is a buddy movie that is a delight from start to finish. A brilliant exploration of life, longing and second chances. It offers a round-trip ticket to the rewards of friendship and the follies and frustrations of middle-age; something that really disturbed me afterwards.

He played the character of Miles with brilliance; a wine connoisseur - novelist who had just to recover from a divorce and recently, learning his book won’t be published.
